| Although most patients are
diagnosed at an early stage of breast cancer
where cure is feasible,
as many as 60% of these patients will eventually
relapse and approximately 10% will present with
disseminated disease, resulting in almost 40,000
deaths. The primary focus of treatment for patients
with advanced/metastatic breast cancer is given
with palliative rather than curative intent,
to prolong survival and improve quality of life.
Toward that end, current strategies include incorporation
of new molecular targeted therapies into existing
treatment regimens in an effort to further improve
clinical outcomes. In addition, novel cytotoxics
and new formulations of classic agents are under
investigation. |
